Matthew 9:14-15

Jesus Is Questioned About Fasting

Then the disciples of John came to Him, saying, “Why do we and the Pharisees fast often, but Your disciples do not fast?”  And Jesus said to them, “Can the friends of the bridegroom (Jesus) mourn as long as the bridegroom (Jesus) is with them? But the days will come when the bridegroom (Jesus) will be taken away from them, and then they will fast.

Jesus went to the Garden of Gethsemane the night they arrested Him. He was there pleading with God to, “remove this cup from Me, but let Thy will be done”, Jesus knew what was to happen, He had told the disciples, but they didn’t understand. He was a human like us, His body and soul didn’t want to go to the cross, yet Jesus prayed and forced His body and soul to follow the Holy Spirit’s direction and God’s will. Once Jesus had brought His body and soul into focus with the Spirit, and after suffering and sweating droplets of sweat and blood, and angel came and strengthened Him. We have to take our body and soul to our own Gethsemane and bring them under control so that God’s will can be accomplished in our life also. Now we have to remember the demons, they are ruthless and will not leave because of simple prayers, bible study and the like, oh, no they are dug in for the fight, they see and know that we are not serious about kicking them out because the individual is still secretly committing sins, and pretending to be churchy. Can this be? Absolutely. When a person is in this spiritual state I believe there is a series of things happening. First of all they are out of fellowship with God. This is a big deal because the deeper you go back in sin the further away from God you get.  Through prayer and fasting we regain our fellowship and restore our strength, God wants this but He will not force Himself on us.  We can do this ourselves, and once we commit to it, then God will strengthen us also.
